How many days since a birthday, since you started a job, since an anniversary, since you quit smoking? Counting elapsed days by hand runs into the same two traps as any date maths — uneven month lengths and leap years. This tool counts the exact days from a past date up to today, so you know precisely how long it's been.

Enter the past date, and the days elapsed to today are calculated instantly.

How is it calculated?

How it's calculated

The count is the difference in day numbers between the past date and today, so month lengths and leap years never throw it off. Change the end date to count up to a day other than today.

Reading the result

  • The result is in whole days; yesterday returns 1 and today returns 0.
  • Weeks-and-days give a quicker sense of scale ("52 weeks 3 days").
  • Over a long span, every leap day in between is automatically included.

Common uses

  • Days since a birthday or how many days you've been alive
  • Time since starting a job (the raw data behind tenure)
  • Days since an anniversary or milestone
  • A motivation counter — days since quitting smoking or starting a habit

For counting down to a future date use a days-until-date calculator; for the gap between two arbitrary dates use a days-between-dates calculator.

Worked example

Suppose someone quit smoking on 1 January 2026 and checks on 7 July 2026: the tool counts the exact day-number difference — 187 days — including the 29 February that a leap year would add (2026 is not one, so none here). That's 26 weeks and 5 days. Seeing "187 days" is far more motivating and precise than "about six months," and unlike counting on the calendar, it can't be thrown off by the differing lengths of the months in between.

FAQ

How do I calculate the days since a date?+

Enter the past date; the tool takes the difference in day numbers up to today, handling month lengths and leap years automatically, and returns the exact days elapsed.

Can I count up to a date other than today?+

Yes — change the end date field. This lets you count elapsed days between any past date and any later date, not only up to today.

Does it include today in the count?+

The result is the number of whole days that have passed; yesterday returns 1 and today returns 0.

How many days have I been alive?+

Enter your date of birth and the tool shows the total days elapsed to today. To see it as years-months-days, an age calculator is more suitable.

Are leap years included in the count?+

Yes — every 29 February between the past date and the end date is counted, so multi-year spans stay exact.

Can I see the result in weeks?+

The result includes a weeks-and-days breakdown alongside the total days, giving a quicker sense of the elapsed time.
